Review :
I got this book, Living Off the Grid: A Beginners Guide on How to Get Back to Basics and Start Living a Simple, Sustainable and Self-Sufficient Lifestyle because I've been interested in homesteading, off-grid living, urban/suburban farming, and the "back-to-the-land movement" for years. So when I saw the e-ARC (Advance Reader's Copy) of this book available for free on BookSprout in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, I immediately got it.But after I finished reading it, I was glad that I'd gotten it for free and NOT bought it because it was NOT what I was expecting. I mean, NONE of the books or articles that I've read so far, ever seems to provide any REAL information about ACTUAL RESOURCES to get started. For example, how (and where!) to find agricultural-zoned land for sale. It's incredibly impossible, since AFAIK Realtor dot com, and other real estate companies don't usually offer agricultural land for sale as a search option (IIRC just residential [single-family homes, condos & multi family residences and residential land] and commercial property) -- and the majority (if not ALL!) of the "residential" zoned land I've gotten in the search results either have municipal ordinances and/or HOA regulations that prohibit most if not all of the usual off-the-grid & homesteading-type practices, like keeping chickens or other "farm" animals, planting gardens (especially in the front yard), hanging laundry outdoors, to name but a few things. None of the information provided that I've seen so far includes the resources to address these roadblocks — and this book was no exception, which was very disappointing and the reason I gave it only 3 stars. I really thought that it would include websites or other information for aspiring homesteaders & off-grid-living supporters to actually GET STARTED on the path. But it doesn't.For the record, I am a lifelong suburbanite who has dreamed for years of living off-the-grid as much as possible, but hopefully WITHOUT having to move to the middle of nowhere, which is what it seems like this author is ultimately pushing. Because, aside from the fact that due to certain medical issues (damn Big pHARMa) I cannot drive, I also have aging & ailing family members, and even if I wanted to (which I don't) I can't just completely abandon them to go live a rural life off the grid — and make no mistake, especially being unable to drive, I basically WOULD be abandoning them since going to visit them or vice versa would be nearly impossible, to say nothing of getting to them in a sudden emergency. Even living WITH my aging & ailing family members in the typical car-dependent suburb without decent public transportation is hard enough, let alone moving out to the boonies all by myself (as I'm single and childless). Which is why I was really hoping that this book would provide resources (like real estate websites focused on agricultural-zoned property) for those of us wanting to homestead & live off-the-grid to do so in the suburbs or even in urban areas.Instead, Living Off the Grid: A Beginners Guide on How to Get Back to Basics and Start Living a Simple, Sustainable and Self-Sufficient Lifestyle is literally, just like the title says, a BEGINNERS GUIDE, that just gives the most basic overview of the off-the-grid and homesteading lifestyle. But there is ALMOST NOTHING in this book that I didn't already know from other books I've read, as well as from magazines like Mother Earth News . This book does NOT go into any real depth or details, which was what I was looking for and I was pretty disappointed!⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 STARS!!!!!!! This is a decent book about getting back to the basic way of life. That is really what living off the grid is. Our country was built by pioneers and those who have chosen to move to an area where they are a least partway off the grid are this time in history’s pioneers. Most people are hooked by today’s technology such as computers, cell phones, and cable TV. Reading has gone out of style. Knowing basics like reading a map, using a compass, growing your own food are skills that many find too hard to even try to learn. It is so easy to jump in the car and go to the store or pull up an app to get directions. The author has some great advice, the book is well-written, informative, and I hope people check it out. I highly recommend this book. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.
